This briefing covered tax-planning strategies for real estate investors and real estate professionals engaged in real estate transactions, including a mix of time-tested strategies, such as like-kind exchanges under Code Section 1031, cost-segregation studies, and long-term capital-gain tax-planning strategies, coupled with more recent issues, including tax planning for the net investment income tax, active participation by trustees of a trust in real estate activities, structuring transactions and ownership arrangements as a tenancy in common, and specialized arrangements and transactions involving REITs. The program also addressed common inbound investment structures used by foreign investors to acquire and hold US real estate.
