Press Release
June 1, 2012

Boston, MA – June 1, 2012 – The Legal 500 United States ranked Sullivan & Worcester in six categories in its 2012 edition, including:

In the Finance category, the Securitization Group is commended for its ability to provide "excellent responsiveness, strong business acumen and industry knowledge." New York-based George Lindsay and Boston partners Duncan O'Brien and Alexander Notopoulos were said to be "highly regarded and particularly well versed in ABS transactions."

Ranked for the first time, the Investment Management group's "knowledge, understanding, judgment, responsiveness, relationships, and time and cost efficiency are among the best," and its mutual fund capability "compares very favorably to other law firms in the field." The seven-partner team represents over 20 different fund complexes holding aggregate assets under management exceeding $600 billion. Co-leader David Mahaffey was mentioned and Partners David Leahy and John Chilton were praised as being "extremely knowledgeable, easy to deal with and provide excellent advice."

The Legal 500 ranked the REIT practice in Tier 3 and praised the group as being "among the best in the business for technical REIT tax matters" and punches above its weight in the sector, representing four of the largest public REITs with an aggregate equity market capitalization of $8.5 billion. Boston-based Ameek Ashok Ponda leads the practice and is "the smartest guy in the room, very responsive, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of REIT rules."

The Legal 500 ranked the firm's Mergers & Acquisition practice as "responsive and knowledgeable, as well as offering good value for the fees charged. The firm gets to know a client’s business needs, and is therefore very capable of giving practical advice. It also often completes complex tasks at substantially lower costs than the larger firms." Boston-based Corporate Co-director Susan Barnard and Co-managing Partner William Curry are both "strong lawyers and excellent business partners." Curry "makes you feel he is your business partner and fully invested in helping you achieve your desired outcome."

S&W’s Tax Group was acknowledged for its activity in the REIT space and represents a significant share of the public REIT markets. Ameek Ashok Ponda led the firm’s advice to American Tower in connection with the REIT conversion process of this corporation with an equity market capitalization of over $20 billion, including associated domestic and international planning issues. Ponda and Christopher Curtis also led the firm’s advice in a similar matter for Iron Mountain. The firm’s litigation practice is acting pro bono as special tax counsel in Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders’ multi-plaintiff constitutional challenge to Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) having succeeded before the Massachusetts District Court and obtaining a ruling later reflected in the reversal of the federal government’s position on DOMA, announced in 2011. David Nagle has a strong litigation and controversy practice, and John Graham’s non-profit work is highly regarded.

The Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation practice was recognized for being "highly responsive and turns information around very quickly." Boston-based David Guadagnoli provides “an excellent balance as a technical and consultative resource on all benefit plan matters.”
