Sullivan & Worcester LLP Receives Top Rankings in Four Categories in the 2010 Edition of The Legal 500 United States

S&W Press Release
June 17, 2010

Boston, MA – June 17, 2010 – Sullivan & Worcester LLP was ranked in the following categories in The Legal 500 United States, a directory of leading legal practitioners in the United States compiled on the basis of peer and client referrals:

In the Finance category, Sullivan & Worcester’s Securitization Practice Group is commended for “the quickest response time of any firm I have dealt with,” “partner coverage,” and “very deep legal, asset class, and industry knowledge.” Duncan O’Brien, co-leader of the Financings Practice Group, is praised as a “dedicated professional who works as many hours as it takes to get a deal done.” Also recommended are Boston partner Alexander Notopoulos, who can “negotiate difficult issues on behalf of his clients while maintaining cordial relationships,” and New York Managing Partner, George Lindsay who has “no perceivable weaknesses as a structured finance lawyer.”

Considered a “small practice, but with fine lawyers,” S&W has eight partners who devote the majority of their time to Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). According to The Legal 500, S&W’s REITs Group is ranked nationally as a Tier 3 firm. Ameek Ashok Ponda heads the REITs team from Boston.

Clients “lavish praise” on S&W’s Mergers & Acquisitions practice for its “excellent around-the-clock response times, incredible industry knowledge and outstanding advice. It is every bit as good as the larger firms, and a perfect fit for company clients with revenues of between $20m and $500m.” William Curry and Susan Barnard are “knowledgeable and pragmatic...their advice was well thought-out and still timely.”

S&W’s Tax Group, considered “one of the largest on the East Coast and certainly the strongest in Massachusetts, provides a comprehensive service which includes advice on domestic and international transactions, tax planning, and controversy advice in both federal and state taxes.” The Legal 500 reports that the “smart, thoughtful, and focused” group provides “excellent support to the firm’s growing bankruptcy and reconstruction department, to the corporate lawyers, and to the finance group. With approximately half of the attorneys of partner rank, and highly experienced, clients comment on ‘good team-building and supervision in complex transactions.’ New York-based Truman Bidwell recently worked with Boston partner Chris Curtis to lead the team which represented Enexis, the largest electric and gas grid operator in the Netherlands, and prior to that, its parent company, Essent in connection with the unbundling of Essent’s grid business and assets from its generation assets. During 2009, Boston’s Richard Jones successfully ‘prevailed against all the odds’ when representing a leading technology company in the Massachusetts Court of Appeal in connection with a state tax dispute over research and development allowances. Ameek Ponda, the Boston-based practice group leader, is commended for his work in the emerging company and REIT sector. Michael Davis, also in Boston, is recommended for high-value estate planning.”
