Sullivan & Worcester works with a number of public and private education institutions with many legal issues specific to their missions. Our lawyers assist education clients on a wide variety of matters, including federal and state tax issues, unrelated business income, employee benefits and pension plans, labor and employment issues, accommodation of persons with disabilities, intellectual property, fund-raising and charitable gifts, tax-exempt bond financing, corporate governance, real estate, liability and risk management. A significant portion of this work is conducted on a pro bono basis. 

Representative Client Work

  • Represented major U.S. universities (including the University of Notre Dame and the University of Southern California) regarding protection of trademarks and team logos on merchandise and team uniforms
  • Represented commercial property owners and developers of a number of Japanese schools who have established locations in the U.S.
  • Successfully arbitrated a contract dispute concerning a charter school and its management company resulting in an award of approximately $1 million and dismissal of several million dollars in counterclaims
  • Established full insurance coverage for a private university in connection with hazing claims that had generated a multimillion dollar punitive damages award
