Van P. Hilderbrand Jr.

Van Hilderbrand Jr. is an associate in the Energy Group and the Environment & Natural Resources Group in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. His practice has become focused on resolving regulatory compliance issues, litigating disputes under federal and state environmental laws, advising on the environmental aspects of business and real estate transactions, consulting on renewable energy project development and project finance transactions, conducting due diligence and assisting with permitting issues, and helping clients navigate climate change issues and manage climate-related risks.

Because energy, environmental, and regulatory issues are not industry specific and affect a diverse set of businesses, Mr. Hilderbrand has leveraged his experience to assist clients across a wide range of sectors including energy, manufacturing, consumer products, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, transportation, technology, and real estate. Although no issue is exactly alike, he has found that experience gained in one industry addressing regulatory issues can be applied across others. Further, his practice enables him to work and collaborate with Fortune 500 companies as well as charitable organizations, non-profits, and religious and educational institutions, all in a day’s work. In fact, his client work has won him recognition as a D.C. Super Lawyer Rising Star in environmental law.

Pro bono legal work also is a thriving facet of Mr. Hildebrand’s practice. He is particularly proud of the work performed for the Conservation Law Foundation, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and the Jewish National Fund and Parson Water Fund, just to name a few. He also has collaborated on projects with Ceres, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the Audubon Society.

Mr. Hilderbrand is a regular contributor to the firm’s blog, the Energy Finance Report, where he provides updates with a particular emphasis on how environmental regulations, policies, and trends are impacting project development and financing in the renewable energy sector. He also regularly comments on the SullivanEnergy Twitter feed, contributes to the Energy Group’s Distributed Energy Finance Report (EDGE Advisory), and is quoted and published in industry trade publications.

Prior to joining Sullivan & Worcester in January 2011, Mr. Hilderbrand practiced environmental law at Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP in Charlotte, North Carolina, and worked as a financial analyst and corporate auditor in General Electric’s energy products and services business. His work at GE particularly shaped his legal practice by providing critical insight and understanding of how companies strategically plan, evaluate risks, reach decisions, and operate internally.
