Van P. Hilderbrand Jr. is an associate in the Environmental & Natural Resources Group and Climate-Related Business & Technology Group in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. His practice focuses on regulatory compliance issues, environmental litigation, permitting, water resource development and renewable energy.
While at the University of Maryland School of Law, Mr. Hilderbrand received the environmental law concentration certificate, and served as managing editor of the Maryland Journal of Health Care Law and Policy. Prior to joining Sullivan & Worcester LLP in January 2011, Mr. Hilderbrand practiced environmental law at Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP in Charlotte, North Carolina, and worked as a financial analyst in General Electric’s energy products and services business.
Mr. Hilderbrand is a regular contributor to the Business Aviation Law Blog.

- Counseled clients on environmental compliance matters involving RCRA, CWA, and CAA, including New Source Review program procedures
- Represented clients in environmental litigation matters in state and federal court
- Advised clients on environmental permitting requirements for renewable energy projects, including new Department of the Interior leasing rules for alternative energy projects on the Outer Continental Shelf
- Advised clients on environmental issues in commercial transactions, including due diligence reviews, permit transfer, facility closures, and liability and indemnity issues
- Assisted clients with redevelopment of brownfield’s properties through state voluntary cleanup programs
- Consulted clients on voluntary auditing and reporting policy requirements, including self-reporting to federal and state environmental authorities
