Caveat Employers: Unpaid Interns Could Be Costly

This Client Advisory discusses the hazards of unpaid internships and offers suggestions for employers on how best to ensure compliance with applicable law. Lawsuits brought by former unpaid interns have recently made headlines, including an op-ed in the June 25, 2013 Wall Street Journal, "Summer Interns Don’t Need 'Intern Advocates,'" by Kate Bachelder. In addition, on June 25, 2013, Outten & Golden LLP filed a class action lawsuit in the Southern District of New York against News Corporation and Fox Entertainment Group on behalf of former unpaid interns for violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the California Labor Code.
