The Real Deal: Tax Planning for Real Estate Transactions

Tax Briefings 2015 (4:00 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.)

October 28, 2015

Sullivan & Worcester hosted a Tax Briefings seminar, "The Real Deal: Tax Planning for Real Estate Transactions," on October 28, 2015, led by Joseph B. Darby III and Brian E. Hammell.

This took a concise but sophisticated look at tax-planning strategies for real estate investors and real estate professionals engaged in real estate transactions. The program covered a mix of time-tested strategies, including like-kind exchanges under Code Section 1031, cost-segregation studies, and long-term capital-gain tax-planning strategies, coupled with some more recent innovations, including tax planning for the net investment income tax, active participation by trustees of a trust in real estate activities, structuring real estate ownership as a tenancy in common, and specialized arrangements and transactions involving REITs. The program also addressed common inbound investment structures used by foreign investors to acquire and hold U.S. real estate.
