JNF Retains ZAG-S&W Law Firm to Serve as Environmental Counsel and Promote Thought Leadership Initiatives in Israeli Water Sector
July 25, 2012 – New York, NY –Jewish National Fund (JNF) is pleased to announce that it has retained the Israeli-U.S. law firm Zysman, Aharoni, Gayer and Sullivan & Worcester LLP (ZAG-S&W) to serve as JNF’s environmental counsel and strategic partner.
"ZAG-S&W is both a legal resource and a strategic partner, committed to helping Jewish National Fund continue to be an environmental thought leader and to refine the focus of our philanthropic funding efforts on a growing array of water- and environmental-related projects," said JNF CEO Russell F. Robinson.
ZAG-S&W is an international joint venture between the two founding firms and the only such law firm of its kind in the world. ZAG-S&W has extensive experience assisting Israeli and U.S. clients in cross-border business ventures and investments. The firm’s Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Group represents Israeli water technology, cleantech, and renewable energy and energy efficiency companies. Through its work in the Israeli market, together with a variety of strategic partners, ZAG-S&W identifies promising Israeli technologies and seeks to match them with partners and investors throughout the world.
"Jewish National Fund has always been a leader in protecting and developing natural resources in Israel," said Jeffrey Karp, leader of ZAG-S&W's Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Group. "We are proud to have JNF as a partner in our efforts to bring awareness in world markets of the extraordinary advances in water technology now coming out of Israel."
ZAG-S&W will bring its knowledge and expertise to bear in helping JNF further refine the project screening and selection process for the JNF Parsons Water Fund, an important part of JNF’s initiative to increase Israel’s supply of high-quality water. JNF has been at the forefront of water management and conservation in Israel for two decades and has already increased the country’s total water supply by 12%. The JNF Parsons Water Fund, led by Dr. Mort Mower of Baltimore, Laureine Greenbaum of New York, and Amy Parsons of Boston, allows donors to direct their contributions to water projects and help determine JNF’s funding priorities. In the last two years alone, the Fund has been responsible for adding 30 million cubic meters of water to Israel’s water economy.
ZAG-S&W also will assist JNF in developing protocols for evaluating potential environmental impacts of JNF’s projects and help to promote environmental stewardship by JNF through identification of alternative approaches and mitigation strategies. ZAG-S&W will work with JNF in seeking to help raise awareness of critical environmental considerations among JNF’s leaders and the constituency that JNF partners with.
The partnership of JNF and ZAG-S&W is already paying dividends. In the Fall, JNF will co-sponsor an international, interactive seminar/webinar on Advanced Water Technologies with ZAG-S&W, the Environmental Law Institute, the Embassy of Israel, and the Israeli Ministry of Industry, Trade & Labor. The program is planned to occur simultaneously in ZAG-S&W’s Washington, DC and Tel Aviv, Israel offices and JNF’s New York City office, and will feature speakers from U.S. and Israeli governmental entities, private industry, and the legal and financial sectors. This will be the third water-related seminar that ZAG-S&W has organized to great success. The first two programs addressed water scarcity, and the water/energy nexus. This however is the first program to feature an international, interactive simulcast, and JNF is very excited to be a crucial part of this landmark endeavor.
JEWISH NATIONAL FUND (JNF) began in 1901 as a dream and vision to reestablish a homeland in Israel for Jewish people everywhere. Jews the world over collected coins in iconic JNF Blue Boxes, purchasing land and planting trees until ultimately, their dream of a Jewish homeland was a reality. Today, JNF continues to give all generations a unique voice in building and ensuring the prosperity of the land of Israel through their generosity and partnership with the people of Israel.
JNF embodies both heart and action; our work is varied in scope but singular in benefit. We strive to bring an enhanced quality of life to all of Israel’s residents, and translate these advancements to the world beyond. JNF is greening the desert with millions of trees, building thousands of parks, creating new communities and cities for generations of Israelis to call home, bolstering Israel’s water supply, helping develop innovative arid-agriculture techniques, and educating both young and old about the founding and importance of Israel and Zionism.
