Sullivan & Worcester Corporate Partner James R. Silkenat Nominated to Become President-Elect of American Bar Association

NEW YORK, NY – February 6, 2012 – Sullivan & Worcester LLP is pleased to announce that Corporate Partner James R. Silkenat was nominated today to become president-elect of the American Bar Association. The ABA's House of Delegates will vote on the nomination in August. If elected, Mr. Silkenat will serve a one-year term as ABA president-elect before taking office as president of the Association in August 2013 at the ABA's Annual Meeting in San Francisco. 

"The American Bar Association plays an important role in strengthening the rule of law in the United States and around the world," said Mr. Silkenat. Mr. Silkenat has a long and distinguished record of service at the ABA. Most recently, he was a member of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession and the ABA Solo and Small Firm Leadership Coalition. He served as chair of the ABA Section of International Law (receiving its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007), chair of the ABA Section Officers Conference and chair of the ABA Standing Committees on Membership and Constitution and Bylaws. He has been a member of the ABA House of Delegates since 1990 and chaired the New York Delegation in the House from 2000 to 2009. He has served as a member of the ABA Board of Governors and as national chair of the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation.

Mr. Silkenat’s legal practice focuses on international joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, privatizations, project finance transactions (in developed and developing countries) and private equity investment funds. Mr. Silkenat has substantive industry experience in energy, hotels, manufacturing, transportation and telecommunications. He is a former legal counsel at the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C. 

Mr. Silkenat is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Law Institute and served as chair of Lawyers Committee for International Human Rights (now Human Rights First), chair of the Commission on the World Justice Project and chair of the Council of New York Law Associates (now the Lawyers Alliance for New York). He was a Fellow in the U.S. State Department Scholar/Diplomat Program and a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is the recipient of the Diversity Champion Award of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. 

Mr. Silkenat received his B.A. from Drury College, where he received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Career Achievement in 2000 and where he also received the Batson Prize in History and the Omicron Delta Kappa Award (the Outstanding Student Leadership Prize). He received his J.D. Degree from the University of Chicago School of Law, where he was an editor of the University of Chicago Law Review, and his LL.M. Degree in International Law from New York University School of Law.
