Sullivan & Worcester LLP Chosen as One of Four Teams from Boston in the American Cancer Society’s National Top 20 Pacesetters for 2010

Law Firm Also Defends Title as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer "Law Firm Challenge Winner" for Sixth Time in Seven Years

S&W Press Release
March 22, 2011

Boston, MA – March 22, 2011 – Sullivan & Worcester LLP (S&W), a corporate law firm based in Boston, with offices in New York and Washington, D.C., has been chosen by the American Cancer Society (ACS) as one of four teams from Boston named to its list of Top 20 National Pacesetters for 2010. This news comes on the heels of S&W also winning the ACS Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Law Firm Challenge for the sixth time in seven years, beating out nearly two dozen other local firms in fundraising contest for charity!

The “S&W Dream Team,” the firm’s group of employees and friends, works to raise funds for the Challenge all year long. The Team once again raised the most money among participating Boston-area law firms. Their fundraising began last spring, and wrapped up at the 18th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, which took place on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at the DCR Hatch Shell in Boston.

According to the American Cancer Society, Sullivan & Worcester (S&W) raised the most funds for the 2010 Challenge over $40,000. All funds raised support the Society’s mission to save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays, by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. “In these tough economic times, raising such a significant amount of money again was quite a feat for our firm,” said Dianne Hertneky, chief operating officer of Sullivan & Worcester. “It is not about the final amount, though, as the Society reminds us; every dollar counts.”

Hertneky says it’s a testament to the firm’s incredible team, many of whom have friends or family members whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. “Our team keeps growing every year, and everyone continues to pitch in through a variety of different efforts. I’m very proud of our firm,” she adds. “While we hope the competition will be stiff, we’re prepared to go to great lengths in 2011 to defend our title once again!”

Law Firm Challenge Team Co-Captains: Paralegal Chris Bullock and Administrative Assistant Patti Flannery, continue to head up the grassroots effort that has produced all six Law Firm Challenge wins to date. Their endeavors have included “pizza wars” among the firm’s floors for recruiting and fundraising; an in-house, on-line silent auction that includes the New York and Washington, D.C. offices; a craft fair and raffle featuring homemade items; sales of the “Sullivan & Worcester Family Cookbook” and a host of other creative initiatives, like collecting fees for “Jeans Friday,” that produced real results. They’re also charged with assembling teams every year for Making Strides, scheduled this year for Sunday, October 2 at the DCR Hatch Shell in Boston.

In 2010, 22 law firms joined the Making Strides Law Firm Challenge and collectively raised more than $115,000, for the fight against breast cancer. The Society implemented the challenge in 2001, to foster friendly competition among local law firms participating in its annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Since that time, firms have raised over one million dollars for the cause; Sullivan and Worcester has contributed $261,905.25 during the course of the Challenge.

“We are truly appreciative of how the Law Firm Challenge has grown over the years and the creative ways companies such as Sullivan & Worcester have raised funds," said Leanne Danielsen, Walk Manager for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. “Sullivan & Worcester has taken on a strong leadership role with this Challenge, as well as in making a difference in the lives of thousands of people impacted by breast cancer.”

S&W staffers credit management at the firm for their ability to win the Challenge, year after year. “Our COO, Dianne Hertneky, communicates to our employees how important it is to take our charitable efforts to the next level,” says Bullock. “She really leads by example, and when she gets directly involved in the fundraising, others follow. It has allowed us to build a real support system around the effort,” adds Flannery. “We couldn’t continue to do what we do, and attract new members to the team without Dianne’s support. She is a great role model for us.”

Bullock and Flannery have really commandeered the fundraising efforts at Sullivan & Worcester. He continues to run a successful cookie baking business within the firm that fully benefits Making Strides (although he’ll never give up his secret recipe!), and she has been just as entrepreneurial, maintaining a lunchtime knitting group whose creations are also sold or auctioned off for the cause. Flannery was also one of only 49 individuals who received the 2008 American Cancer Society Sandra C. Labaree New England Volunteer Values Award. The whole firm gets on board, though, pulling in vendors to donate, friends to fundraise, and giving fellow staffers undergoing final cancer treatments a send-off, complete with flowers and a small celebration.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Boston is the oldest and largest one-day walk to fight breast cancer in the nation. Since its inception in 1993, Making Strides in Boston has raised more than $46 million to support the American Cancer Society’s critical mission to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. In 2010 alone, over 40,000 supporters walked along the Charles River Esplanade and helped to raise more than $3 million.

Making Strides in Boston is one of more than 145 Making Strides events held throughout the nation. Since 1993, nearly seven million walkers have raised more than $400 million through Making Strides. Last year alone, nearly 800,000 walkers across the country collected $60 million to help fight breast cancer.

About the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, about 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
